Chief economist

Jurij Christopher (JC) Kofner is Chief Economist at the MIWI Institute, with a strong background in applied economic research and policy advising. His work focuses on market integration, fiscal decentralization, and energy economics.

He studied foreign economics at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) as well as at the Higher School of Economics, and deepened his expertise through advanced training at leading institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, KU Leuven, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the Deutsche Bundesbank, and the Freedom Education Institute in Vienna.

Professionally, he serves as economic policy advisor to the AfD parliamentary group in the Bavarian State Parliament and Members of Parliament from the AfD in the German Bundestag, and held roles at the ifo Institute for Economic Research in Munich and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Vienna. He also coordinated regional integration projects at the Higher School of Economics, working with the Eurasian Economic Commission and national ministries.

His research focuses on regional economic integration, particularly within the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union, as well as fiscal federalism and deregulation. He also works on energy and digital policy, trade economics, and price statistics. Methodologically, he applies advanced techniques in STATA, including difference-in-differences, synthetic control, and trade gravity and general equilibrium models.
